Enjoy a mini holiday with a 45 KM hike through some of Denmark’s most beautiful landscapes and stay close to the trail, Højlyngsstien
Organize your hiking holiday according to your wishes. Sjælegård and Birkelund offer stays along Højlyngsstien for two, three or more nights in our newly renovated holiday apartments. The basic package is based on one night at Sjælegård followed by one night at Birkelund but there are lots of nature experiences in both places and the option to extend your stay. We have divided the hike into three stages, each of 13-15 KM. This is a self-guided hike based on our suggestions and tips. There is good signage along the trail but we recommend that you use an app for hiking, e.g. All Trails.
From Sandvig via Opalsøen and Hammershus to Sjælegård (10-14 KM)
The hike begins in charming Sandvig, where you either arrive by bus from Rønne or in your own car.
Choose between two fantastic walking routes: Around Hammerknuden where you will pass by the crystal-clear lakes and the dramatic rock formations along the coast. You can also choose to go directly on Højlyngsstien in Sandvig, which takes you via an area of heather to Opalsøen and Hammersø, where you then continue onto Højlyngsstien. The distance from Sandvig to Sjælegård depends on the route you choose to take. We recommend that you check the two routes, for example on the All Trails app.
Follow Højlyngsstien past Hammershus and Hammersholm through Ravnedalen to cozy Sjælegård, where a brand-new holiday apartment with a high level of comfort and sense of aesthetics awaits you. A delicious dinner basket with a simple recipe and carefully selected ingredients is ready to be prepared in the well-equipped kitchen. The beds are already made and fresh towels are laid out for you.
After a good night’s sleep, you can enjoy a wonderful breakfast basket with coffee and tea, juicy buns, jam, etc. There are also ingredients for preparing a packed lunch. If you have chosen to stay another night at Sjælegård, it is time to explore the farm’s rich nature and nature restoration project with grazing horses and cows. Alternatively, you can take a hike out to Vang and Ringebakkebrudene on the island’s West coast. There is also the opportunity to enjoy a day of relaxation and wellness with a dip in the wilderness bath.
Sjælegård to Birkelund by Spellinge Mose (13 KM)
The walk along Højlyngsstien towards Birkelund takes you through enchanting landscapes with rocks, heather, and forests. Explore the sights along the route: Ole Christensen’s Sculpture Park, Sct. Ols Round Church and Rutsker Højlyng, where you will find one of Bornholm’s three rocking stones – see if you can make this 20 ton stone move!
Højlyngsstien leads you to Birkelund close to Spellinge Mose. Here you check into your private cozy holiday apartment amid the forest and meadows, where grazing cows ensure good biodiversity. A dinner basket is ready for you to prepare a delicious and easy meal based on organic and/or local goods from Bornholm. Feel free to enjoy your dinner al fresco in the outdoor lounge area with a fire pit or in the garden conservatory with a lit fire in the wood-burning stove. Here you can enjoy the evening sky sheltered from wind, rain, and the cold. If your shoes are wet, we offer shoe dryers. After a good night’s sleep, there are the ingredients for a delicious and nutritious breakfast and packed lunch in your basket, just like at Sjælegård. Now you are ready for a new day with your hiking boots on!
If you stay an extra day at Birkelund, you are welcome to spend the day relaxing – for example at our beautiful lake, Tværmyr. Or go exploring in the area, for example a walk to Spellinge Mose or going further along the old railway to Rø and on to the impressive Helligdomsklipper (the Sactuary Cliffs). The trip back to Birkelund goes through Døndalen, a rift valley with Denmark’s highest waterfall. In Spring, the ground is covered with anemones and bear’s garlic. Pick some to make a homemade pesto for your dinner. Along this nature trail you come through untouched forest, boulders, and heather banks past Rø Golf Courses.
From Birkelund to Sandvig along the Coastal Path (appox. 15 KM)
The trip back to Sandvig goes via the Coastal Path along Bornholm’s dramatic North coast past the small towns of Bådsted, Kås and Tejn, where we can recommend a coffee stop at Brødre Bagerne or at the harbor. Well supplied, the trip goes past the beautiful beach at Sandkås, through the cozy harbor town of Allinge and on to Sandvig.
It is possible to travel quite climate-friendly and cheaply to Bornholm by bus from, for example, Copenhagen with the Kombardo bus to Rønne and onward with Bus 1 to Sandvig.
